Medium of Instruction:
The Medium of Instruction of the HDSW programme is English supplemented with Cantonese for most of the modules. Unless specified, the teaching and assessment materials are also in English.

Admission Requirements
  • Obtain Level 2 or above in any FIVE Core Subjects / Elective Subjects (including
    Chinese Language and English Language) in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary
    Education Examination (HKDSE)*; or
  • Obtain relevant Qualifications Framework Level 3 qualification with at least 1-year
    full-time study load or equivalent recognized by the HKCAAVQ; or
  • Complete Diploma offered by YMCA College of Careers; or
  • Complete pre-Associate Degree or Diploma Yi Jin or an equivalent qualification; or
  • Age 21 or above will be considered on an individual basis; and
  • Pass the admission interview
  • Interview priority will be given to applicants who have social services experiences.
  • Remarks:
    Applicants possessing “Attained”, “Attained with Distinction (I)” and “Attained with Distinction (II)” in
    Applied Learning (ApL) subjects are deemed to have attained “Level 2”, “Level 3” or “Level 4”respectively in
    the application, , and a maximum of two ApL subjects (excluding ApL(C)) can be counted for admission purpose.
Further Opportunities

Graduates upon completion of our HDSW programme are well equipped with the
essential social work knowledge and skills, who should be able to take up the Diploma
Posts and Social Work Assistants. According to the Annual Report of Social Work
Manpower Requirements System 2021, the projected new demand for Diploma Posts
will be 1,053 and 1,058 in 2021/22 and 2022/23. This is far exceed the projected new
supply of diploma graduates of 468 and 494 in 2021/22 and 2022/23 . [1]

Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong (CYMCA) also offers promising placement arrangement
and career prospects. Having more than 60 service units across Hong Kong and a close
tie with NGOs, schools and commercial sector. CYMCA can offer job opportunities for
our graduates.

According to the Civil Service Bureau, the salary point for Registered Social Worker
(Diploma post) is starting from the Master Pay Scale Point 9 ($23,295 per month) (with
effective from 1/4/2022) .[2]

Graduates who wish to pursue further studies can choose from the QF Level 5
programmes offered by the local tertiary institutions.

Professional Recognition

  • Graduates are eligible to register as a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the Social Workers Registration Board.
